IOWA STATE

Ouch… again!  To all the Buff faithful, I am sorry for the outcome (of the Missouri game). Coach Pinkel took me to the woodshed in a big way; it’s hard to remember, but that may be the largest loss I have ever been a part of.  Football, as in life, will always have a way of humbling you the longer you throw yourself into the fire.

It is easy in life to not risk, never try, never reach.  Change requires growth, growth can sometimes be painful.  The highest highs and the lowest lows are easily avoided if we are content to hang in the safe zone.

I have a sign on the back of the coach’s door that reads:

1.         Be positive

2.         Be a great teacher

3.         Coach to win

4.         Enjoy yourself

We will maintain our consistent approach to improve and get better in all areas.

I have had the good fortune to be around some great mentor coaches.  They taught me the difference between the average coach and the great coach is one that takes responsibility for players’ mental mistakes (being a great teacher), and physical mistakes (technique and putting them in a position where they can physically succeed).

Many will say that it is the players’ responsibility to play hard, but if that young man does not have some basic needs met, he cannot be optimally motivated (those of you who have heard me speak about Maslow know what I am talking about).  We have a talented staff who are concerned about our guys as people, students, and athletes.  It is our responsibility to enable them to have success and we will.

“Do or do not, there is no try,”- Yoda

We have a great group of young men.  We will rise again. No matter what the outcome, we continue to focus on the process and the lessons our team and players are learning.  It does no good to gloat or pout regarding the outcome.

Iowa State has been getting better and has battled hard.  They never quit against Oklahoma as they hung in to the very end, and they did a great job last week getting win number two against a very good Kansas State team.  We need to take the lessons learned from this week’s pain and eliminate them from next week’s trial.  If we can continue to do that we will always be the best we can possibly be.

Book?  “The Alchemist” by Paul Coelho.  A boy leaves the safety and comfort of home to set out across the land to discover his person legend…………………… Hmmm, sound eerily familiarJ

Movie? Baseball is over, but let’s go with “Field of Dreams”.  One of the reasons I love it, is because no matter how wild the guy’s dreams and ideas are, his wife believes in him and his wacky ways.   Hmmm, also sounds familiar.

Music?  You know I just have to go old school and go with The Spinners.  One because I love old school R&B, the other because Charles Johnson’s dad was one of the original singers!  That’s cool.

Keep the Faith—The Buffs are still comin’!

Peace,
Hawk
